Re: Jjoe Nitro's Guide to Minstrel Charm | ||

I'm gonna bet this is either a pic from a euro server, or an older pic from a previous patch.
I had a conversation with a euro player about just such a thing a while ago, he swore he could hold a 68 Calleach Guard, and I didn't believe him until he provided a screenshot. He reminded me that Euro servers run somewhat behind our patches, and a long time ago, just after the changes to minstrel charm, it was possible to charm purples easily. Personally, I would have liked to be able to see the server chat box to see the number of resists on this pet. Also, I will admit - I charmed a level 63 Mindworm in emain just a few days ago on Pellinor. I took a screenshot myself if anyone wants to check it out Jjoe Nitro!!!!!!!!!!!!

Minstrel Charm! | ||
|
This information is sound all in all but is missing some things.... First you can stealth and keep a pet charmed, this is tricky as you have to have your timing down to a science or your gonna get your butt kicked by either the pet or the person/group your attacking.... Practice with the Dragonflys in Gothwaite harbor if your on a blue server. Another thing ive done instead of even bothering with getting involved with melee ( I hate having to get my hands dirty Another feature I have noticed with the Minstrel charm is that it will interrupt casters in combat (I think this is a Mordred only feature as an acqauintance of mine from another server has had no luck with it) what you want to do is when you see the caster winding up to cast you just spam the pet charm on them you must be in combat mode for this to work. Lets add some combat tactics to this thread... you can do the DD Mezz timer dance... Find your target from stealth open up with your 2 DD's and start the mezz as soon as the 2nd DD hits (sooner you will get auto resisted) watch the clock as this is very very important, stay at range (mid DD range) and as soon as your 60 seconds is about up DD mezz, use the stun as back up. This is how you deal with those pesky Hybrid tank classes that dont have Determination. Purge is not your friend here, but thats what that back up Stun is for. Well known pets for Frontier combat are, my personal Favorite the Frost Stallion, they are the single most devastating creature we can charm in my opinion...they do huge melee damage and AE Heat Proc. These are in Odins gate in Midgard. For the new pet minstrels the Icestriders and Fenrir Prophets are also good starter pets, both have neat abilities, these are also in Midgard. Hib Frontier we have 3 to choose from, the Mindworm, these are all red to purple con mobs, they have single target 9sec stun and a single target mezz with good melee lightly armored. Then the Bloodletter (giant scorpion) they are 48-52 dual weild and proc a DoT they can out run anyone and then we have Pookas(black horse)they have huge melee and a single target str/con debuff 68 points if I remember correctly. (Ive seen a Pooka debuff and kill a hero before he could stag). There are other neat pets readily availbale im sure but these are the ones I found most effective. And the final tip for you new Pet Minstrels, get yourself the Nostromo n50 or the Game-Commander both of these controllers let you macro your keys....I have my pet charm cycle ever 1/1000 of a sec as long as I have the right button pressed....with this little feature ive been able tocharm and hold lvl 77 Caer Sidi mobs as pets. This takes practice and getting used to, so dont think that by getting this hardware your gonna become some super minstrel. I know this is an old thred but I thought I would add my 2 cents So if you have any questions youll find me trolling here or on the VN Boards on Mordred. |

Killwind,
I am RR6. RvR in groups is all I do. I can do level 58 pets and twist in the other abilities with fair success (running speed with pets in groups I try to keep it to oranges). If I try higher than level 59 I get too many resists so I tried this spam charm thing. I held down the key continuously and was able to hold the pet. However, as soon as I moved, or performed any other ability, I would lose control of the pet right away. Any ideas why I don't have success with this technique? (Camarilla, I am looking for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) Thanks, Sheolraven/Asilyn |

Sounds like your forgetting that when you hold down a key, if you press any other key, the one you were holding down stops working, you need to let go of it for a split second and then press it down again.
It's the nature of the hardware... Jjoe Nitro!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought when someone said they were spamming charm that meant they were holding down the key continuously. Someone I talked to said they stuck a paper clip in the keyboard to hold the charm key down. Maybe he just did that while he was resting.
Apparently, spamming charm means continuously tapping the key. Performing other abilities simultaneously would be even more of a challenge. Don't think I could do that in a group without losing speed....Maybe I should look into one of these nostromo speed pad or whatever they are things if I want to charm level 58 and higher. No, that's not quite right - What I mean is that you hold down the charm key, but occasionally you need to reach over to press the speedsong key - when you do, you need to let go of the charm key for a split second while you tap the speedsong key, and then press and hold the charm key again.
Here's a few more things that you should know - You can't do this if you use the keyboard to drive. you HAVE to use the runlock to move - if you hold down the up arrowkey to move, it won't work. also, you should drive with the mouse - if you try to steer with arrows keys, it also won't work. This is because of a design issue with keyboards. Try this experiment. Hold down a letter key on your keyboard while in notepad. hold it down until it starts to repeat - then, tap another key. You will find that the repeating key stops and it types one copy of the other key, even if you let go of the other key, it won't go back to entering the letter you were holding down. This same thing works in daoc - if you were holding down a key, and then tap another key, it breaks the one you were holding down until you let go and press it again. Jjoe Nitro!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am somewhat new to the Minstrel class and Albion as a whole. I started a level 20 Mintrel on Mordred. I am learning all three realms now... sheesh! The Stealthing Beastmaster really sounds good for Mordred, Killwind. I may /respec my slash at 40, now. I am definitely going to take my instrument spec up to 50!! If I keep playing daoc... I am currently only level 37.
I have one small thing I would like to add. With gear that is lacking and maximum inst spec you can grind XP non-stop on OJs and reds with the double tap/ spam charm technique. The additional method that I used was to let the pets die as they fight, then grab another pet mid-fight. Find a large area of mobs that con high OJ and low red and burn up your OJ pets on the Red ones. Let the OJs die and just run and get another to finish off the red. Charm uses no power or endurance, so you are always able to get out of trouble with stuns or sprint and can aoe mez adds if you need to as well. As long as your pet keeps aggro, however, you don't really need to mez adds. Just charm one of the adds right after your pet dies, from max range, and run until your new pet gets the aggro. Caution: if you lose control of your low health OJ pet, via resist, at the wrong time, then the red mob will outrun your low health pet to get to you when the aggro switches to you. You could get away but would lose time. So monitor your resists and spamming carefully. Rate of xp is damn good with this and you can do it right out of the gate at level 20 with newbie armor and weapons on a new server. There is no down time and this is easy to do as well. The only tricky part is switching targets momentarily to send your pet after your target and then re-targeting your pet to resume charm spam. There is not really much use for this if you are already level 50... except maybe to PL a toon get yourself the Nostromo n50 or the Game-Commander both of these controllers let you macro your keys.... ..What is a Nostromo and a Game-Commander; what function would they provide; and where could I get them? Here is a clicky for you. Can be purchased at most stores that have a good selection of joysticks/Game controllers.
Picked mine up at a Comp USA for about $25 bucks last spring. |

Hey jjoe!
Glad to see the guide is being revised, a 'pets in rvr' section would be usefull for many Im sure. If you need a fresh perspective on any areas m8, just gimme a shout and I will help anyway I can. A couple of small things in the guide need touching up like the fact that you can map commands like /stick and /face to the keyboard now instead of taking up valuable hotbar slots. Also another way to target the pet is to create a hotbar slot for it. Ive been away from the game for awhile but am back now. Prydwen server has just been patched to 1.63 fyi. Keep up the good work m8. Beck Beastly

@killwind:
"...and then we have Pookas(black horse)they have huge melee and a single target str/con debuff 68 points if I remember correctly. (Ive seen a Pooka debuff and kill a hero before he could stag)." where can this pookas be found plz (loc)? because in the bestiary they are classified with maximum level 35 in brefeine. is this information false or is there an other spot with higher level pookas? or do you use level 35 pookas? |

Re: loc grand pookhas | ||

I'd be interested in finding one of these, too, as I don't think I've ever handled one yet.
I usually use a mindworm (because they are easy to find and control), but when I can get one, my current favorite is teh Gorb Wounder. It looks like a regular gorb, so it's often ignored in RvR, and since it's name is in red, it's often un-noticed as anything more than a yellow since all player enemy names are red. These things frequently proc a bleed that can keep someone out of speed or stealth for a good bit of time. I havn't tried a GPooka, but would love to give it a try Jjoe Nitro!!!!!!!!!!!!

Quote: You can also make a quickbar icon to target the pet. Hold shift and click on the pets name to make the icon. Should make it easier, even though it will take up a slot. But if it means it being 100% reliable it might be worth to consider. |
